What is Organizational Leadership & Change?

Organizational Leadership and Change is Pacific Oaks’ unique approach to the study of leadership. Historically, leadership programs have been a combination of several areas of study: Organizational Studies, Leadership Studies, Authentic Leadership,  and Transformational Leadership.

Organizational Studies

Rooted in the Social Sciences, Organizational Studies explores how structures, processes, and practices can be shaped to form positive relations between institutions and individuals, groups, governing bodies, as well as other institutions. Introducing theory and practical application, Organizational Studies branches into a variety of areas, including management, psychology, communications, public administration, law, as well as many other related fields.

Leadership Studies

Closely linked to Organizational Studies, Leadership Studies expands on the former to include various leadership theories, styles, and approaches and their impact in organizational contexts as well as in everyday life. Originating in Social Science, Humanities, and professional fields of study, Leadership Studies has become one of the fastest growing fields in higher education during the last 20 years. Two models of leadership that are often examined are Authentic and Transformational.

Authentic Leadership

Authentic leaders are able to build legitimacy through honest relationships with their team and coworkers. By promoting openness, trust, and enthusiasm, authentic leaders are able to improve team cohesion, effectiveness, and productivity. Beyond simply managing their teams, authentic leaders inspire their teams and coworkers to address challenges and find solutions—reinforcing a synergetic relationship between employees’ professional development and organizational goals.

By honing in on several personal development tools—including self-awareness, relational transparency, balanced processing, and internalized moral perspective—authentic leaders are able to relate to their coworkers and build a sense of empathy that allows them to thoughtfully balance organizational needs with the needs of their employees. The most recent leadership model in the field, Authentic Leadership has received much more attention due to the publications of Harvard professor and former Medtronic CEO Bill George.

Transformational Leadership

Directly linked to Authentic Leadership through the practice of inspiration, Transformational Leadership is an approach to leadership that fosters a need for significant social change and provides a vision to guide others to executing that change. Role models and icons, transformational leaders become most effective when they are able to inspire others to marry their own personal identities to the collective identity of the organization or movement.

Transformational leaders are able to affect significant change by aligning organizational goals with the public good. Illustrating how these goals can significantly impact the world around them, transformational leaders are able to effectively build advocacy that extends well beyond the organization.

Pacific Oaks Organizational Leadership and Change programs have been specifically designed to help students develop into authentic leaders who can effectively align organizational goals with the public good. Through the development of management and leadership competencies graduates will be prepared to transcend cultural, political, and national barriers—navigating the complexity and unpredictability of for-profit or nonprofit organizations. To complete the program, Organizational Leadership and Change students develop a self-directed applied research project based on personal/professional interest, real-world experience, and career goals.
